New CEE Chair: Robert Harley

Featured Faculty: Robert Harley, Samer M. Madanat

Professor Robert Harley will be the new CEE chair, effective July 1, 2015. He has been a CEE faculty member since 1993 and teaches in the Environmental Engineering program.

"I feel that Rob will not only strengthen existing areas of expertise but also grow some new themes going forward," said Dean Shankar Sastry.

The Dean also thanked Samer Madanat for leading CEE so well these past 3 years and wishes him well as he heads to NYU Abu Dhabi as Dean of Engineering.

Harley holds a bachelor's degree in Engineering Science (Chemical Engineering option) from the University of Toronto, and both M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering Science from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

His research focuses on air quality and sustainable transportation; he is an author of over 90 papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and serves as an associate editor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. Harley received the National Science Foundation's young investigator (CAREER) award in 1996, as well as a visiting scientist fellowship (1999-2000) at the University of Colorado / NOAA Aeronomy Lab in Boulder.

Harley served for 3 years as Vice Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Berkeley (2001-04), chairing committees that were responsible for undergraduate curriculum and graduate student admissions. He also served as Environmental Engineering faculty group leader (2007-10).

During the first half of 2011, Harley was a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany. Harley is also appointed as a Faculty Scientist/researcher in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a US Department of Energy science lab located adjacent to campus.
