Strawberry Creek Ecological Project Breaks Ground Week of Oct. 6

Featured Faculty: Kara L. Nelson

The Strawberry Creek Ecological Stabilization Project is breaking ground on the west end of the UC Berkeley campus in the Eucalyptus Grove.

CEE Environmental Engineering master's graduate, Aysha Massell (CEE MS '13), working with Professor Kara Nelson, obtained a grant in May 2013 from the campus-based The Green Initiative Fund to start the Strawberry Creek Ecological Stabilization Project. The Project's focus was to design and install a fish pool habitat in a degraded section of Strawberry Creek.

In addition to increasing channel stability, this project is an ecological restoration effort to support native fish and plants.

At the end of the Oct. 6 week, heavy construction will commence, to be followed by community planting events and an opening ceremony.

The project is the latest and most ambitious of UC Berkeley’s campus creek restoration initiatives.
