Kenichi Soga Named a Bakar Fellow, Recognizing Breakthroughs in Smart Infrastructure

Featured Faculty: Kenichi Soga

Professor Kenichi Soga is one of 7 Berkeley faculty scientists named as 2019-20 Bakar Fellows, an honor that gives the fellows the money and time to translate their laboratory breakthroughs into technologies ready for the marketplace.

His project is Smart Infrastructure using Real-time Distributed Sensing Technology.

The Soga lab is developing a new low cost real-time dynamic Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) system and deploying it in real construction and infrastructure sites.

With support of the Bakar Fellows Program, he and his research team aim to create a larger market for DFOS in the infrastructure industry and to promote the technology as part of innovation in engineering design and decision-making processes
