Shaping the Fate of Low-Carbon Cement Science aims to bring together experts from the cement chemistry, physics, materials science and civil engineering domains to discuss the outstanding fundamental scientific challenges limiting an effective, widespread deployment of low-carbon cement and concrete. The conference will bridge fundamental science with practical, application-oriented outstanding challenges of low-carbon cement and concrete. The ultimate goal is to provide a roadmap of critical scientific work still required to fulfill the current roadmap towards a net-zero concrete industry by 2050.
The conference will take place in Ascona, Switzerland, from June 29 - July 5, 2025.
Incoming professor Franco Zunino is organizing the conference, with support from the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM).
Conference topics:
1) Low-carbon cement production (clinkerization, thermodynamics of clinker formation, new chemistries for clinker production, firing technology, grinding technology, carbon capture, utilization and storage)
2) Alternative binders
3) Low-carbon cement hydration (mechanisms, new experimental approaches, insights, thermodynamic model ling, opportunities and limitations of experimental techniques available)
4) Low-carbon cements structuration (rheology, thixotropy of multiphase cements, the flow loss phenomena, interaction of low carbon cements and admixtures)
5) Low carbon cement transport phenomena and durability (ion transport, water transport in low carbon cement microstructure)
6) Low carbon cements modelling (atomistic modelling of hydration products in low carbon cements, microstructural modelling of correlation with experiments)
