CEE Professor Kenichi Soga has co-authored the newly released Fundamentals of Soil Behavior, Fourth Edition (Wiley) with the late Professor Emeritus James K. Mitchell and Professor Catherine O’Sullivan of Imperial College London, a former PhD student in Berkeley CEE.
Building on the legacy of the widely used and highly cited third edition, this updated volume integrates the latest research on the physical properties of soil and the fundamental principles that govern its behavior. The book features hundreds of tables and graphs illustrating relationships among soil composition, classification, state, and both static and dynamic properties. Each topic is examined from a micro-to-macro perspective—linking atomic and particle-scale behavior to macroscopic performance—providing a comprehensive framework essential to modern geotechnical engineering practice.
