In a new study by Berkeley CEE Professor Alexandre Bayen collaborates with UC Berkeley CITRIS and the Banatao Institute where the team examines how routing-app interventions can help reduce traffic congestion in urban areas. Published in Nature Cities, the research explores how real-time mobility data and navigation technologies can improve the efficiency of transportation networks and mitigate delays on highly congested roadways.
Using large-scale experiments across approximately 100 congested road segments in 10 major U.S. cities, the study investigates how targeted routing strategies can distribute traffic more effectively and reduce the impacts of congestion. The findings highlight the potential of data-driven approaches to support more efficient, sustainable, and resilient urban mobility systems.
