Berkeley Civil & Environmental Engineering Professor Nicholas Sitar concluded more than 30 years of service on the UC Berkeley Seismic Review Committee (SRC) on July 1, 2026. Throughout his tenure as both a committee member and chair, Sitar helped shape the university's approach to seismic safety, strengthening policies and reviewing processes that continue to protect the campus community.
Following the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Sitar played a key role in advancing comprehensive seismic reviews of campus buildings, developing standardized seismic design criteria, and supporting initiatives that improved the resilience of laboratories, research facilities, and new construction projects. His expertise in geotechnical earthquake engineering and seismic hazards helped establish many of the practices that continue to guide campus development today.
Reflecting on his service, Sitar shared, "Seismic safety is always a work in progress," expressing confidence that the university's commitment to resilience will continue under the next generation of engineering leaders.
