DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PHD)

Berkeley CEE is a place of intellectual vitality─a vitality evident in its creative and forward-looking curricula and classroom teaching, its attentive academic mentoring, and the innovative research conducted by students and faculty.

Our doctoral degree applies the natural sciences to solving real-world engineering problems within a broader societal context.

SHAPE OUR FUTURE.
BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION.

A CEE PhD will have:

Depth. You will satisfy, through course work, a major within the department. Two minor areas appropriate to your area of research are also required.

Rigor. Our curriculum provides a strong basis for advanced professional practice, research, or teaching. Studies can be tailored to fit individual needs and interests, whether broad-based and multidisciplinary, or narrowly focused and highly technical.

Flexibility. Earn your doctoral degree in a wide-range of concentrations. Each of our 7 concentrations lets you tailor your program of studies to suit your interests. Our inherent flexibility can accommodate the needs of a diverse population of students.

Cutting-edge research. Your research will develop advanced theory and understanding as well as tools and techniques for professional practice and for solving societal problems. At Berkeley, you will take part in defining the evolving domain of civil and environmental engineering.

Faculty mentorship. Select your courses in consultation with a faculty guidance committee.

Access to industry. Interaction with other academic institutions, consulting companies and practitioners, gives you the exposure to the state-of-the-art practice through invited lectures and site visits to ongoing engineering projects both locally and internationally.

Service. Our mission is to serve society. Along with faculty and peers, you will contribute your expertise where needed. You will be a part of the solution.
