Biography

Stefano Schiavon is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Professor of Architecture. He is the Associate Director of the Center for Environmental Design Research (CEDR) at UC Berkeley. Schiavon’s research focuses on finding ways to reduce energy consumption in buildings while improving occupant health, well-being, and productivity. He is involved in the Center for the Built Environment. Schiavon is a recipient of the prestigious REHVA Young Scientist Award in 2010 and the ASHRAE Ralph Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award in 2013, among other accolades such as the three best paper awards he received from the journal Building and Environment in 2018.

Research

Schiavon’s research focuses on sustainable architecture, air conditioning, and satisfaction. He has experience in laboratory measurements, post-occupancy evaluation, and building performance simulation. Buildings account for 39% of the United States’ primary energy consumption and 72% of US electrical energy consumption. Schiavon’s research explores ways to reduce energy consumption in buildings and, at the same time, increase indoor environmental quality. He has worked on ventilation strategies, heating, cooling, personal environmental control systems, radiant-hydronic systems, air movement, thermal comfort, systems integration, air quality, view, and building renovation. He is familiar with building performance simulations, laboratory measurements, post-occupancy evaluations, and on the effect of the indoor environment on health, performance, and satisfaction
