We are pleased to welcome Dr. Cynthia Gerlein-Safdi, who joins the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering as an Assistant Professor on January 1, 2022. Dr. Gerlein-Safdi’s research spans a broad range of topics in ecohydrology. Her research goals are to better understand the link between water and carbon in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum in the context of a changing climate and determine how ecohydrology may apply to practical problems such as the hydrological impacts of land use change. She uses a variety of methods from stable isotopes to modeling and remote sensing to capture the water and carbon fluxes of ecosystems.
Dr. Gerlein-Safdi is currently a project scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She received a BSc and an MEng in Geophysical Engineering from the University of Strasbourg, France. She graduated from Princeton University in 2017 with a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Certificate in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy before spending three years as a fellow from the Michigan Society of Fellows in the department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan.
