We are delighted to share that Austin Chen was named a winner of the Thornton Tomasetti Foundation National 2022-2023 Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship provides funding for awardees to pursue graduate studies in building engineering, design or technology.

Austin is a recent graduate from UC Berkeley where he majored in Civil Engineering and minored in Data Science, Sustainable Design, and Music. Next fall, he will be attending MIT, pursuing a Master's degree in Structural Mechanics and Design. He developed an interest in structural engineering early on after taking the introductory course with Professor Matthew DeJong, who later recruited Austin for an ongoing research project involving vibrations in masonry arch bridges.

With a longtime passion for design, Austin also found an appreciation for architecture and other environmental designs during his time at Berkeley, which he hopes to integrate into his future structural engineering endeavors. On the side, Austin enjoys writing and producing music, graphic design and motion graphics, and loves to play pool and volleyball.

Congratulations, Austin!
