CEE Professor Dimitrios Konstantinidis received the 2021 Best Paper in Analysis & Computation Award from the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering for the article “Integrated Structural-Nonstructural Performance-Based Seismic Design and Retrofit Optimization of Buildings"! Check out the full list of structural engineering papers that received awards here!
Konstantinidis co-authored the article with Paul Steneker (Ph.D. graduate at McMaster University; currently at WSP), Andre Filiatrault (IUSS Pavia), and Lydell Wiebe (McMaster University). The paper develops a general optimization procedure to identify what combinations of structural and nonstructural seismic retrofit options will minimize economic losses, downtime, and casualties over the lifetime of a building. Each year, the Journal of Structural Engineering selects only three Best Paper Awards in the categories of Analysis & Computation, Materials & Structural Response, and Structural Hazards.
