Congratulations to CEE Professors Scott Moura and Marta Gonzalez, who have been appointed to key leadership roles within the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) for the 2025–26 academic year! Professor Moura will serve as Acting Director of ITS Berkeley, while Professor Gonzalez will serve as Acting Faculty Director of California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH), a research center within ITS.

Professor Moura steps in while current ITS Director Daniel A. Rodriguez is on sabbatical. Moura is widely recognized for his research in modeling, estimation, and control of energy systems. He leads the Energy, Controls, and Applications Lab (eCAL), mentors a diverse cohort of students and researchers, and has earned numerous honors, including the NSF CAREER Award and the ITS Faculty of the Year Award. “This is a very exciting opportunity, and I am honored to have been chosen,” says Moura. “I’m excited to work with colleagues across ITS to make long-lasting societal impacts through research and innovation. I’m also excited to work with Professor Gonzalez as she leads PATH this coming year.”

Professor Gonzalez, who holds joint appointments in CEE and City & Regional Planning, is a renowned scholar in urban sciences and mobility systems. She also holds a faculty position in the Energy Technology Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Her research explores the intersections of people, cities, infrastructure, and social networks, with a focus on equitable and sustainable development. “This is a great way to contribute to the ITS and PATH community,” says Gonzalez. “I’m thrilled to help guide PATH as we shape current and future technologies and policy.”

Gonzalez’s work has earned international recognition, including the 2024 Lagrange-CRT Foundation Prize, a 2023 Network Science Society Fellowship, and awards from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the United Nations Foundation. She is also the recipient of the 2021 Joseph M. Sussman Prize for best article in Frontiers in Built Environment.
