The CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni announces its Class of 2020.  This year's class includes 8 active members and 2 In Memoriam members (as listed below).

Unfortunately, ADA's annual October banquet has been postponed due to the pandemic. We hope that we can come together in October, 2021 to celebrate both the ADA Classes of 2020 and 2021.

Active Members

John A. Cherry, Ph.D, NAE

Adjunct Professor, University of Guelph; Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo

For foundational research and publications on the fate, transport, and characterization of industrial pollutants in the subsurface environment with a particular emphasis on chlorinated solvents; and, for his global leadership on the urgency to protect the quality of groundwater around the world, as recognized by his global water awards, including the Lee Kuan Yew and Stockholm Water Prizes. John D. Hooper, P.E., S.E., F.SEI

Senior Principal, Director of Earthquake Engineering, Magnusson Klemencic Associates

For exemplary contributions and tireless efforts in advancing the seismic design provisions of building codes; for advancing performance-based seismic design; for innovative seismic design of large, iconic projects in the U.S. and around the world; and, for many years of support to Berkeley CEE through lectures, research collaboration, and support of the efforts of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center. See bio and photo.

Steven L. Kramer, Ph.D., P.E., D.GE., NAE

Professor Emeritus, University of Washington

For internationally-recognized advancements in the field of geotechnical earthquake engineering, including soil liquefaction, seismic slope stability, and seismic site response; for development and application of performance-based design in geotechnical engineering practice; and, for his contributions to the education of a generation of geotechnical earthquake engineers through his book Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering. See bio and photo.

Iraj Noorany, Ph.D., P.E., G.E.

Professor Emeritus, San Diego State University

For outstanding contributions to the field of geotechnical engineering, particularly as they related to marine geotechnics and the behavior of deep compacted fills; for more than 50 years of teaching, mentoring, and service to improve the practice of geotechnical engineering; and, for his career-long ties to Berkeley CEE, through guest lectures, short courses, and graduate fellowship support. See bio and photo.

George J. Pierson, MSCE, P.E., Esq.

Executive Chairman, Kleinfelder

For his effective leadership as Chairman, President, and CEO of several of the nation's largest, oldest, and most prestigious civil engineering firms; for leadership in improving risk management practices in the engineering and construction industries; and, for service to the profession and generous support of Berkeley CEE. See bio and photo.

Bernard Saunier, Ph.D.

Carolyn Searls, MSCE, P.E.

Principal, Head of Building Technologies Division, Simpson Gumpertz Heger

For a distinguished career as a leading Bay Area geotechnical and environmental engineer focused on issues and projects related to contaminated site cleanup and redevelopment and environmental protection; for many years of business leadership as company President and CEO; and, for being a tireless supporter of Berkeley CEE through scholarship support and guest and distinguished lectures. In Memoriam Members

David N. Kennedy, NAE

Director, California Department of Water Resources

For a career filled with contributions to the State of California through his 16 years as Director of the California Department of Water Resources; for his efforts to protect and improve the water resources of the State by introducing environmental safeguards and ecosystem considerations; and, for his ability to build consensus among stakeholders to achieve public policy achievements such as the Bay-Delta Accord. Jerome F. Thomas, Ph.D. (Honorary)

Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley

For nearly 40 years of contributions as a teacher, researcher, consultant, and mentor as a member of the Berkeley CEE faculty; for research and expertise in applying the principles of chemistry to CEE problems involving water and wastewater treatment, air quality, and hazardous waste management; and, for his kind, considerate, Renaissance persona that contributed greatly to the life and fabric of Berkeley CEE.
