The 28th Annual United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was hosted in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The purpose of COP28 is to bring together World leaders to discuss how to make the world a more sustainable place. The framework around sustainability includes the 17 Sustainable development goals. In her talk, Community Engagement for Civil & Environmental Engineers, Nia Jones, (CEE)² Staff Director, highlights #4, #7, #9, and #11.
The (CEE)² program is Community Engaged Education in Civil & Environmental Engineering. It is the first-of-its-kind program that integrates knowledge sharing of internal and external stakeholders that fall within four community buckets. The first community is the CEE community at UC Berkeley, which includes faculty, students, staff, and affiliates. The second community is the industrial partners that aim to provide learning opportunities for CEE students and engagement opportunities for external audiences. The third community is 12 students that engage with both the CEE communities, the industry communities, and the fourth community. The fourth community is community-based organizations, non-profits, and non-governmental organizations. The purpose of this program is to create an inclusive environment for learning and provide unique pathways to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Civil & Environmental Engineering disciplines.
