We are delighted to announce that Daniel Arnold has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the CEE faculty cohort, effective July 1, 2023! Arnold will be making valuable contributions to CEE's ECIC and Systems programs. He completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley in 2015 and then held a postdoctoral researcher position at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory before securing a research scientist role in 2017. Arnold is an up-and-coming leader in the field, harnessing modern data science tools such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and control to enhance the stability and security of energy and power systems.
His research focuses on enhancing the stability and security of distributed energy systems using cutting-edge data and computational science tools like autonomous control, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Looking ahead, Dr. Arnold plans to continue and expand his work on power and energy systems and broaden his research to include control and optimization of cyber-physical systems more broadly.
Arnold says, "I have been part of the UC Berkeley engineering community since 2009 when I began my Ph.D. studies in the Mechanical Engineering Department. During my Ph.D., I focused on applying control theory and optimization to the electric power system and have continued this work since joining Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a research scientist. I explore issues that lie at the intersection of control theory, optimization, machine learning, and the electric power system, with a particular emphasis on cybersecurity in the context of growing renewable energy generation sources."
