Berkeley CEE Alumni Ellen Rathje and Elizabeth Hausler Elected to National Academy of Engineering

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected two CEE alumni into its 2025 class. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer, and academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education.

Congratulations to our alumni who were inducted into the NAE's 2025 class:

Ellen Rathje (M.S.'94, Ph.D.'97), Janet S. Cockrell Centennial Chair, Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering, University of Texas at Austin, Austin. For contributions to seismic slope assessment and site response analysis and the development of cyberinfrastructure for natural hazards engineering.

Elizabeth Hausler (M.S. '98, Ph.D. '02), founder and chief executive officer, Build Change, Denver. For transformational impact as an international social entrepreneur, saving lives by building sustainable communities with natural hazard resilience.

Overall, the NAE elected 128 new members and 22 international members to its 2025 class, bringing its total U.S. membership to 2,487 and the number of international members to 336. New members will be inducted into the academy during the NAE's Annual Meeting on Oct. 5, 2025.
