New Faculty in CEE: Dr. Sally Thompson

CEE welcomes Sally Thompson, new assistant professor in Surface Water Hydrology.

Sally's research focuses on vegetation as a major driver of the water balance, and explores how patterns in the spatial organization of vegetation provide insight into the complex spatial and temporal distributions of water in the landscape and in ecosystems. She combines field, remote-sensing and modeling techniques and applies cross-disciplinary approaches to make novel contributions in hydrology. An early version of her work in this area was recognized as an “Outstanding Student Presentation” by the American Geophysical Union in 2007.

Sally will teach surface water hydrology courses in CEE’s Environmental Engineering program, eventually developing new courses in the areas of eco-hydrology and nonlinear dynamics.

Sally received her PhD in Environmental Science from Duke University in May 2010, having been supported as a Monash Scholar. Her doctoral research won her a Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research Manuscript in the Nicholas School of the Environment in 2010. Upon graduation, she served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Purdue University in fall 2010.
