Mike George Wins US Society of Dams Scholarship

Featured Faculty: Nicholas Sitar

Mike George, Geo-Engineering doctoral student, was awarded the 2013 US Society of Dams scholarship for his research on rock scour.

Mike and his advisor, Professor Nicholas Sitar, are currently working on developing state-of-the-art methodologies for the prediction of scour in blocky rock masses. Scour of rock is a critical issue for dam/public safety as excessive erosion of a dam’s foundation or spillway can lead to instability of the dam itself. Meaningful quantification of the scouring process is paramount to assuring the continued operation of these structures.
