Video: Alumna Chelsea Preble on Monitoring Black Carbon in West Oakland

Alumna and current postdoc Chelsea Preble (CE PhD '17) —with Julien Caubel, Troy Cados, and Professor Thomas Kirchstetter—created a network of custom-built, low-cost black carbon air pollution sensors throughout the community of West Oakland. Working with community partners, the team distributed 100 sensors across West Oakland for 100 days to better understand air quality patterns across the neighborhood. 

This study created the densest network of black carbon sensors in a single city, and found that black carbon concentrations can vary significantly over short distances and time scales.
