In Memoriam: Professor Emeritus John Dracup

Body

Professor Emeritus John A. Dracup passed away at his Santa Monica home on December 20, 2021, surrounded by family. He was 87 years old.

Dracup joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley in 2000, after serving for 35 years on the faculty at UCLA. As a hydrologist, Dracup's research centered on the impact of climate change on hydrolic processes, and the optimization of groundwater and large-scale river basin systems.

Throughout his career, Dracup conducted clean water projects in Africa, and Central and South America. In retirement, he remained active and engaged with the CEE community, and focused his energy and expertise on providing sustainable clean water systems in developing, remote countries. In 2020, he published Clean Water for Developing Countries, a guide for determining the best method to provide clean water in developing countries.

Dracup's prominence in the field of hydrology and his research contributions were recognized by his election as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

Professor Dracup is survived by his loving wife, sister, five children, eleven grandchildren, and great-granddaughter.
