Department History

From the very inception of the University of California, its founders made it clear that Civil Engineering (CE) was key to the growth and prosperity of the young state of California. The faculty and graduates of the currently named Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department have proved them right, building a world-leading program at UC Berkeley and a legacy of achievement in California and beyond. This historical summary records some of the people, places, and chronology of the early history of CEE at Berkeley.

CEE Students, Postdocs, and Faculty Members Receive 2024 Institutional Lead Award

Congratulations to CEE students, postdocs and faculty members for receiving the 2024 Institutional Lead Award by the IEEE ITSS for the CIRCLES project! The CEE awardees includes postdoc Hossein Nick Zinat Matin, Ph.D. students Han Wang, Sulaiman Almatrudi, Arwa AlAnqary, Zhe Fu, Alben Rome Bagabaldo, Joy Carpio, Abdul Rahman Kreidieh, and faculty members Maria Laura Delle Monache and Alex Bayen.

CEE Sophomore Daniel Villasenor Wins $100,000 On ESPN'S College Game Day

On Saturday morning, Daniel Villasenor, a CEE sophomore, won $100,000 after successfully kicking a 33-yard field goal on ESPN's "College GameDay" in front of thousands of Cal fans on campus and millions of viewers at home. 
 
Although Villasenor missed his first kick, he surprised hosts Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit by making the 33-yard field goal on his second attempt while wearing Vans.
