Gabriel Lobo's Solution for Safer Lead Pipes Highlighted at ACS Conference

Doctoral student Gabriel Lobo's cost effective solution to make lead pipes safer in distribution systems was highlighted at the recent 2019 American Chemical Society conference in Orlando, FL.

"More than 18 million people in the US are currently at risk of developing health problems from lead leaching from pipes in their water distribution systems," says Gabriel Lobo.

Lobo became involved in this issue when his adviser, Professor Ashok Gadgil, began to focus on finding a solution for the lead problems in Flint, MI.

Manufacturing Engineering – Intern LTD (3 Months)

PURPOSE: This position will support the manufacturing and
engineering departments by performing time studies, developing and updating
SOP’s, and process improvements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Observe, improve and document best practices of assigned process
  • Perform time study of assigned process to update cycle time after implemented changes
  • Present results of time study to associates, managers and directors
  • Establish current baseline of cycle time, efficiency and cost per unit of assigned processes
  • Will perform analysis, including monthly and quarterly reporting in both Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
  • Will support both the Manager and Director for at once requests for information.
  • Will assist Sr. Manager with documentation related to projects and departmental reporting

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND
ABILITIES:

  • Must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Must have good math sense and high level of accuracy
  • Must be able to multitask on a wide variety of tasks and work in a fast-paced environment

THE POSITION:

The City is looking for up to three (3) interns who will assist the Public Works Engineering Department on various municipal projects. Positions are open for the following fields of interest:

 

  • Capital Improvement Program (CIP) – Civil engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement project management, design of civil infrastructure, and construction delivery processes.
     
  • Private Development and Right-of-Way (ROW) Permitting – Civil engineering majors with an interest in plan checking development projects, reviewing a variety of City issued permits, and other related tasks to improve the functions of development and ROW review.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must be in the process of earning an undergraduate or Master’s degree in civil engineering or a related field as described above.  Applicants must have a valid California Driver’s License (Class C).

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn new information quickly
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Project) and web-based resources

A team of Doctoral Students Teach Elementary School Students about Tracking Stormwater

CEE doctoral students Rachel Scholes, Emily Marron, Daniel Ocasio, Scott Miller, Hannah Greenwald and postdoctoral researcher Chris Olivares go into elementary school classrooms once a month with a lesson plan on stormwater to excite local students about science and the environment.

The group is participating in Bay Area Scientists in Schools (BASIS).

The group created their own lesson plan based on their research, tracking storm water, how rain falls in the city, picking up contaminants on the way to collection drains, and how it is treated to become usable.

Samantha Eng Receives 2019 SOM's Structural Research Fellowship

Samantha Eng, MS student, was chosen as the recipient of the 2019 Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Foundation Structural Research Fellowship. 

SOM Foundation cited Samantha's thoughtfulness in her research proposal and travel Itinerary, which they feel demonstrates her skill and maturity to carry out the research.  Her thoughtfulness is consistent with the foundation's goal "to provide opportunities to do in-depth research, meet with other professionals in the field and pursue independent study outside the realm of established patterns.”
