A Civil Engineering Assistant is responsible for the following essential functions: prepares plans, specifications and cost estimates for minor flood control or road maintenance projects such as retaining walls, parking lots and similar projects utilizing commonly used software applications and specialized engineering software applications such as Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD); assists in field investigations and studies and in the preparation of preliminary and final plans, specifications, and cost estimates for a variety of construction and maintenance engineering projects such as drainage and wastewater systems, dams, mountain roads, highways, street lighting and water distribution systems, debris basins, storm drains, spreading grounds, and other flood control and water conservation facilities; performs calculations requiring knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, calculus, elementary mechanics, strength of materials, statics, geodesy, and structural analysis; assists in conducting hydraulic and hydrologic studies to determine design criteria and operational requirements for flood control and water conservation structures; compiles data for and assists in making studies or tests relating to the location, size and capacity of other engineering structures or facilities; and assists in the review portions of plans for engineering structures prepared by other public agencies or by private firms to determine if they conform to department standards and practices and sound engineering principles.

The University of Texas at Austin Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in geotechnical engineering. All exceptional candidates with a geotechnical engineering background that support the CAEE strategic vision of developing innovative solutions to the interconnected problems of water, energy, and the growth of cities will be considered. However, candidates with a focus on computational geotechnics are particularly encouraged to apply. The University of Texas at Austin Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in environmental engineering with a focus on “wastewater engineering in the 21st century.” Research areas of interest include preparing for alternative downstream water uses; removing recalcitrant compounds and emerging micro-pollutants including nanomaterials; determination of biotransformation pathways of contaminant removal; recovery of nutrients, energy, or energy sources; biochar production from waste; reducing energy consumption; stemming the spread of antibiotic resistance; and the traditional requirements of removing carbon and nutrients. The analysis and optimization of the wastewater bioconsortia with the use of advanced bioanalytical approaches are also of interest to maximize treatment of and resource recovery from wastewater. The practice of wastewater engineering in the context of environmental sustainability requires an understanding of the underlying microbiology and chemistry, energy use and recovery, the ecological consequences of liquid, solid, and gaseous discharges, and knowledge regarding the appropriate application of these concepts to developed and developing countries. The successful candidate is expected to establish a well-funded research program that supports graduate students, bring excellence to classroom teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and be involved in service to the university and the profession.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for multiple full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty positions; all ranks will be considered. The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at North Carolina State University (NCSU) expects to fill three positions over the next two years. The first position will be in the area of large scale structural engineering experimentation, while the other positions are expected to be in the broader civil engineering areas of structures, geotechnical, materials, and resilient infrastructure systems.
