Areas of specific interest within Smart Civil and Environmental Engineering Systems
include enabling adoption of autonomous systems, intelligent controls, urban informatics,
resilient infrastructure, and problem-centric applications of innovative technologies (e.g.,
robotics for disaster relief, construction, or infrastructure management). Research
applications can be in any domain of civil and environmental engineering, however the
candidates should have demonstrated expertise in national and societal priority areas that
relate to the highly interdisciplinary 21st century urban engineering and sustainability
challenges. Applicants building upon broad disciplinary backgrounds, for example in
other engineering fields, computational sciences, earth sciences, or environmental health,
are particularly encouraged to apply.

Support projects from the planning phase through closeout. Specific deliverables are expected to
include:
• Engineering studies and alternatives analyses;
• Functional requirements and design criteria documents;
• Pre-conceptual and conceptual designs/concept sketches;
• Procurement specifications;
• Statements of work for detailed engineering designs;
• Initial project schedule development for engineering deliverables;
• Oversee design subcontractors;
• Design reviews;
• Engineering support during construction including field walk downs, issue resolution, and
design changes;
• Interface with internal and external customers andend-users;
• As-builts and project closeout.
