Alumna Barbara Simpson receives 1.25M DOE grant for offshore energy research

CEE alumna Barbara Simpson (CEE PhD 2018) is the principal investigator on a research project to be funded by a $1.25M grant from the US Department of Energy. 

The research team will simulate the combined and complex effects of wind and wave forces on turbines by conducting physical experiments and numerical models.

Dr. Barbara Simpson is an assistant professor of structural engineering at Oregon State University.

Professor James Rector provided geophysics expertise in an interview with KTVU News regarding Governor Gavin Newsom's recent moratorium on fracking projects in the state of California.

On Nov. 19, 2019 the Governor stopped the approval of new hydraulic fracturing in the state until the permits for those projects can be reviewed by an independent panel of scientists.

Professor Emeritus Jerome Thomas passed away on Nov. 7. His Memorial Service is on Nov. 23.

CEE Professor Emeritus Jerome F. Thomas passed away on Nov. 7, 2019.  He was 97.

Professor Thomas joined the CEE faculty in 1948 as a Teaching Assistant and rose through the ranks to full professorship in 1965. He taught in the Department until his retirement in 1987.

He received his BS in Chemistry from De Paul University in Chicago in 1942 and his PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1950.
