The Historical and Masonry Structures group of the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering, University of Minho, Portugal, seeks a junior or experienced researcher with a PhD to join the STAND4HERITAGE project. The position will focus on the stochastic analysis of the seismic signal with the aim to generate a representative variation of ground motion records (both source and structure-sensitive), and to examine the influence of the signal on the dynamic (seismic) behaviour of masonry structures.
Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Professor Kara Nelson's lab has been conducting research on monitoring COVID-19 in wastewater. By measuring levels of the virus in sewage, her team tracks the prevalence of COVID-19 among many thousands of people by testing from a single sample station. This method is not only more effective and efficient than relying on clinical tests, but allows researchers and policymakers to track the virus' spread well before individuals show symptoms.

CEE graduate student Kieran Janin, along with four teammates from Berkeley Engineering, won the 2020 Google Cloud & NCAA® March Madness Analytics Competition hosted through Kaggle. Though this year's March Madness tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Janin's team used machine learning to analyze data from previous seasons in order to uncover the "madness" behind the famous men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments.
