CEE graduate student Kieran Janin, along with four teammates from Berkeley Engineering, won the 2020 Google Cloud & NCAA® March Madness Analytics Competition hosted through Kaggle. Though this year's March Madness tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Janin's team used machine learning to analyze data from previous seasons in order to uncover the "madness" behind the famous men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments.

The mission of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is to protect California’s people and environment from harmful effects of toxic substances by restoring contaminated resources, enforcing hazardous waste laws, reducing hazardous waste generation, and encouraging the manufacture of chemically safer products. DTSC seeks applicants for two Hazardous Substances Engineer positions. The Hazardous Substances Engineer, under general supervision of a Supervising Hazardous Substances Engineer I, works independently, and performs a variety of tasks related to the development and implementation of specialized hazardous waste programs and requirements.

CEE alumna Ritu Garg has been named to the Top 50 Women in Engineering: Sustainability awards (WE50), which celebrates women in the United Kingdom who have contributed to the engineering industry and related fields.
CEE doctoral students Anu Kuncheria and Soomin Woo have been awarded the California Transportation Foundation (CTF) Intelligent Transportation Society of California (ITS California) partnered scholarship. Each year, the scholarship recognizes accomplished students who wish to advance their studies in the area of intelligent transportation systems.
Dr. Timothy Brathwaite earned the first place 2018 Eric Pas Dissertation Prize from the International Association for Travel Behavior, for his dissertation "The Holy Trinity: Blending Statistics, Machine Learning and Discrete Choice, with Applications to Strategic Bicycle Planning." Brathwaite is the only person to earn the first place award while being a student at UC Berkeley. He was presented the award at the 99th annual Transportation Research Board meeting in January 2020.
Looking for PhD graduates from UC Berkeley or UCLA, for a postdoc position to work on a funded project looking at demographic change, transportation policy, labor force changes, municipal finance and service delivery, and other topics in California’ Central Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. Postdoc is through USC’s Price School of Public Policy, working together with a team at Occidental College and UC Davis.
