Kieran Janin and Team Win Kaggle x Google Cloud Analytics Competition

 

CEE graduate student Kieran Janin, along with four teammates from Berkeley Engineering, won the 2020 Google Cloud & NCAA® March Madness Analytics Competition hosted through Kaggle. Though this year's March Madness tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Janin's team used machine learning to analyze data from previous seasons in order to uncover the "madness" behind the famous men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments.

Timothy Brathwaite Wins Eric Pas Dissertation Prize

 

Dr. Timothy Brathwaite earned the first place 2018 Eric Pas Dissertation Prize from the International Association for Travel Behavior, for his dissertation "The Holy Trinity: Blending Statistics, Machine Learning and Discrete Choice, with Applications to Strategic Bicycle Planning." Brathwaite is the only person to earn the first place award while being a student at UC Berkeley. He was presented the award at the 99th annual Transportation Research Board meeting in January 2020.
