Liya Weldegebriel wins AGU's Outstanding Student Presentation Award

Liya Weldegebriel wins an Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA) at last year's American Geophysical Union conference.

Her paper was titled "What determines the success of soil and water conservation practices? A case study from the Tana and Beles sub-basins, Ethiopia." Faculty adviser: Sally Thompson

These honors are awarded to only the top 5% of students, and there were over 5000 student presenters judged last year.

Filip Filippou co-authors ASCE's "2018 Best Journal Paper in Analysis & Computation"

Filip Filippou, Byron and Elvira Nishkian Professor of Structural Engineering, co-authored the paper selected as ASCE's 2018 Best Journal Paper in Analysis & Computation. Co-authors are Dr. Paolo Di Re and Professor Daniella Addessi from the University of Rome.

The paper, "Mixed 3D Beam Element with Damage Plasticity for the Analysis of RC Members under Warping Torsion," appeared in the Journal of Structural Engineering (JSE), one of the most prestigious journals in the field of structural engineering.

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University (Ithaca campus) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the broad area of Civil Infrastructure Engineering. Applicants should have a deep expertise in a foundational discipline (such as engineering mechanics, applied mathematics, risk analysis, materials science, and/or computational science and engineering) and a history of research achievement supporting technology in at least one of the following areas:

  • Cyber physical systems, smart cities, novel materials, and/or digitized construction practices (such as additive manufacturing) to create a more resilient and sustainable built environment
  • Sustainable energy development and infrastructure
  • Engineering within off-world contexts

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. and will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate, master of engineering, and M.S./Ph.D. course curricula within the civil infrastructure focus area, while maintaining a rigorous program of leading-edge research. The ability to form large research teams to address complex problems will be viewed favorably, as well as potential linkages to Cornell Tech (NYC campus).

The Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering (DGSE) invites applications for a tenure-track Associate or Assistant Professorship in Geological Engineering (GE). We offer BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology (interdisciplinary graduate program), and Geological Engineering (Geo-engineering PhD). Applicants must have a PhD and demonstrate commitment to both undergraduate and graduate instruction in the GE program as well as development of an externally-funded program of research in their specialty. Preference will be given to candidates who have at least one degree in Geological, Civil, or Environmental Engineering, with a specialization that strengthens our GE program. The undergraduate degree program in GE is ABET-accredited and the position requires assisting in the ongoing accreditation process and in continued development of the educational objectives of the GE program. The position also requires the ability to teach courses within the GE curriculum which demonstrate the relationship between geology and engineering. The applicant’s resume should reflect the ability to fit into a quality GE program within a department that combines the geosciences and engineering. Although not required of applicants, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam or professional engineering registration will be advantageous.

Emily Cook is a winner in the 2019 Geosyntec Groundwater Student Paper Competition

PhD candidate Emily Cook was one of the winners in the 2019 Geosyntec Groundwater Student Paper Competition. Her paper was titled "Feasibility tests for in situ chemical oxidation of PFASs in a contaminated aquifer."

The contest recognizes graduate students performing cutting-edge research related to the assessment and treatment of chemical contaminants in soil and groundwater.

Emily's faculty adviser is Lisa Alvarez-Cohen.
 

Jack Moehle receives Joe W. Kelly Award from American Concrete Institute

Professor Jack Moehle has been awarded the American Concrete Institute's Joe W. Kelly Award for "dedication to engineering education, outstanding contributions to earthquake-resistant design and analysis of reinforced concrete buildings, and leadership of ACI technical committees.”

The award is given only for outstanding contributions to education in the broad field of concrete.

Bayen addresses the future of mobility at World Economic Forum and in Der Tagesspiegel article

Professor Alexandre Bayen was featured on a panel discussing the societal impacts of the New Mobility, the massive ongoing transformation in how the world moves people, things, and data. 

The panel is part of the events around the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting at Davos, Switzerland.
