Description

The Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is searching for faculty candidates in the areas of structural engineering and construction materials. Application and nominations for tenure-track or tenured faculty positions at all levels are requested. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and welcomes applications from women, underrepresented groups, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. We are interested in exceptional candidates at all levels. We expect all candidates to have a strong commitment to research, doctoral student mentoring, and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants should have a doctorate in civil engineering or a related field of study, and those applying for Associate Professor or Professor ranks must have a well-established academic records. The intellectual depth, innovation, and promise of the candidates are of higher priority than their specific research area; however, a strong experimental research emphasis is desired. Some areas of specific interest include: (1) characterization of construction materials at different levels of observation, (2) evaluation of existing infrastructure under environmental aging, (3) repair and rehabilitation of aged infrastructure using new techniques and materials, and (4) development of new sustainable construction materials including green concrete.

Description

Areas of specific interest within Smart Civil and Environmental Engineering Systems
include enabling adoption of autonomous systems, intelligent controls, urban informatics,
resilient infrastructure, and problem-centric applications of innovative technologies (e.g.,
robotics for disaster relief, construction, or infrastructure management). Research
applications can be in any domain of civil and environmental engineering, however the
candidates should have demonstrated expertise in national and societal priority areas that
relate to the highly interdisciplinary 21st century urban engineering and sustainability
challenges. Applicants building upon broad disciplinary backgrounds, for example in
other engineering fields, computational sciences, earth sciences, or environmental health,
are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Beavers Hosted Student Field Trip to Calaveras Dam Replacement Project

The Beavers hosted 19 CEE students and Professor Iris Tommelein at the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project for their Student Day on October 27, 2017.

This project, a joint venture between Dragados-USA, Flatiron West Inc., and Sukut Construction Inc., offered everyone a unique opportunity to learn about the engineering and project management of such a complex project.

The $800 million project, slated to complete in 2019, consists of building a new zoned earth and rock fill dam immediately downstream of the existing dam.
