Principle Power Inc is looking for a Structural Engineer (marine/hull structural engineering) to join its team and help design the next generation of its floating platforms for wind turbines: the WindFloat. The candidate will be part of PPI's team of structural engineers, and will work toward commercialization of the WindFloat. The structural group splits its focus between current designs, for specific site conditions, and R&D to optimize the performance, fabrication and ultimately the cost of the WindFloats in future projects. Design tasks for current projects includes preliminary sizing of steel structures, strength, buckling and fatigue analysis and detailing of the structures. During design, engineers interface with designers to produce packages of drawings for certification and fabrication. Structural engineers follow closely the fabrication planning and execution phases to provide support as necessary.
The Cal Construction Team, composed of Berkeley CEE and Architecture students, along with faculty adviser Professor Iris Tommelein, drove to Sparks, NV to compete in the 2018 Construction Competition of the Associated Schools of Construction.
The Berkeley CEE team has the highest success rate (percentage-wise) of any school that brings more than 2 teams.
Nanyang Technological University appointed Kenichi Soga, Chancellor's Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, as a Tan Chin Tuan Exchange Senior Fellow. Soga delivered the keynote lecture at the 10th anniversary conference of the Geotechnical Society of Singapore.
Soga spoke on "Innovation in Geotechnical Monitoring."
Kenichi Soga, Chancellor's Professor in CEE, and the Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC) at Cambridge University placed fiber-optic cables that will serve as permanent sensors on the underground structure built at London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).
By taking regular readings from the cables, the researchers will have a case study that will help validate the nonlinear elastoplastic finite element analysis that was used as a predictive tool on the project.
The American Public Works Association (APWA) Northern California Chapter is sponsoring an internship program to provide career opportunities for future leaders in the public works industry. The summer of 2018 will mark the inaugural edition of APWA Norcal’s internship program. Paid internship opportunities will be available through this program from a variety of employers including public agencies and leading firms in the private sector. Benefits of participation in this internship program include:
• Hands on experience working with leading professionals in the public works industry
• Practical application of your education
• Networking with industry professionals
• Potential future employment opportunity
• Student membership with APWA
• Compensation
To participate in this program, please complete the enclosed internship application form along with all other required supporting documents and submit them via email to William Lai, Assistant Civil Engineer, at William.Lai@dublin.ca.gov by March 2nd, 2018. For questions or to obtain more information, please contact Mr. Lai at 925-833-6630 or at the above referenced email address. Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a “speed dating” style interview fair with potential employers. The interview fair is tentatively scheduled for March of 2018.
2017 was a great year for the UC Berkeley student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
We congratulate Adjunct Professor Norman Abrahamson on his election to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for 2018.
Abrahamson was elected for his contributions to seismic hazard assessment and for leadership in engineering seismology and earthquake engineering.
On Feb. 1, GeoSystems PhD students organized the first ever Geotechnical Engineering Research Symposium (GERS), a conference where current Berkeley PhD students and research associates could discuss their research with friends and partners in the geotechnical industry.
Event organizers were Ezra Setiasabda, Christie Denissen Hale, Grigorios Lavrentiadis, and Estefan Garcia.
Professor Alexandre Bayen is working on smarter apps that will actually talk to one another to prevent clogged freeways and city streets.
Since “we can’t build our way out of congestion,” Bayen says, the only way this will work is if the apps collaborate and steer different people along different routes to prevent congestion.
Bayen discussed current problems caused by traffic apps, and how UC Berkeley researchers hopes to solve the problem to help commuters and cities alike at his May 2017 Cal Future Forum.
