The professionals at the National Security Agency (NSA) have one common goal: to protect our nation. The mission requires a strong offense and a steadfast defense. The offense collects, processes and disseminates intelligence information derived from foreign signals for intelligence and counterintelligence purposes. The defense prevents adversaries from gaining access to sensitive classified national security information.

The United States has experienced profound changes that impact the way the National Security Agency (NSA) conducts its mission. The explosion of Internet communications has created a need for the Computer Network Operations (CNO) mission. This very important mission includes computer network defense and computer network exploitation. In order to carry out these functions NSA is looking for analysts who are highly skilled, want to stay on the leading edge of technology and impassioned about ensuring the United States maintains a strategic edge in cyberspace. These are NOT your average Cyber, Computer Science, Networking or Engineering jobs!

Computer Network Analysts are hired into positions directly supporting a technical mission office (either on the offensive or defensive side) or one of a few different development programs like the Intrusion Analyst Skill Development Program (IASDP) and the Cybersecurity Operations Development Program (CSODP) (formerly named the Information Assurance and Cyber Development Program ( IACDP)). These development programs are 3 years in length and combine formal training and diverse work assignments that may cross both offensive and defensive missions.

As a Computer Network Analyst on the offensive side you will:

  • analyze all-source data to evaluate foreign target opportunities
  • understand and evaluate foreign target network
  • develop strategies against those foreign target networks

As a Computer Network Analyst on the defensive side you will:

  • identify cyber threats and anomalies by conducting research and analysis on data collected from numerous sources
  • identify vulnerabilities and their impact to customers
  • build and integrate defense response capabilities against these threats

The offense collects, processes and disseminates intelligence information derived from foreign signals for intelligence and counterintelligence purposes. The defense prevents adversaries from gaining access to classified national security information.

The need to maintain our core Computer Science group is vital to provide the technical capabilities necessary to successfully execute NSA's mission. The increased complexity of supporting NSA's mission requires world class researchers, programmers, and developers who operate in teams in areas such as software engineering, information technology infrastructure, high performance computing, data science, architectures, computer security, and networking in order to design and develop advanced tools, techniques, and systems.

Digital Network Exploitation Analysts employ computer science skills to perform discovery and target technology analysis of digital network and mobile communications. Digital Network Exploitation Analysis are hired into positions directly supporting a technical mission office or the Digital Network Exploitation Analyst (DNEA) Development Program ' a 3 year development program that combines formal training (i.e., SIGINT, discovery/analysis, and advanced cyber security) and diverse work assignments.

As a Digital Network Exploitation Analyst at the NSA, responsibilities may include:

  • conducting analysis of metadata
  • conducting target analysis and research
  • identifying target communications within the global network
  • performing global network analysis and mapping
  • using knowledge of customer requirements to analyze and process intelligence information
  • performing exploitation and operations on target networks

NSA MDLAs are hired into the Language Analysis Development Program (LADP) or, in the case of MDLAs with extensive experience in Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), directly into positions supporting an analytic mission office.

The LADP, which lasts up to three years, is designed to provide an intensive, accelerated opportunity to acquire the unique technical skills and experience needed to successfully apply knowledge and analytic ability to the SIGINT mission and help MDLAs achieve core analytic competencies in accordance with the Cryptologic Training System Training Standard and the MDLA competencies framework. The program includes 4-5 operational tours in a variety of offices, interspersed with formal classroom and computer-based training. These on-the-job operational tours are primarily focused on analyzing foreign language materials within the framework of the two main SIGINT disciplines of intelligence analysis - SIGINT reporting and SIGINT development.

Multidisciplined Language Analysts are at the forefront of carrying out NSA's SIGINT mission, and they do so in a variety of ways. MDLAs:

  • Offer U.S. policymakers and military leaders a window into the foreign language world of intelligence targets by analyzing, transcribing, and translating key information
  • Research and understand foreign intelligence targets, how they operate, and how they fit in the larger geo-political context
  • Apply new techniques and develop creative solutions to address analytic problems such as synthesizing large volumes of data and disparate sources of information
  • Demonstrate a firm understanding of the communications environment and technology trends of foreign intelligence targets
  • Craft written and oral assessments of foreign intelligence that provide unique insights into target intentions unavailable from other intelligence disciplines
  • Work independently and collaborate effectively (both within NSA and with other analysts in the Intelligence Community) in research, analysis, and reporting
