Professor Emeritus Adolf May was featured in today's East Bay Times article on metering lights.
May was a traffic engineer in Illinois when he set up the first ramp meter in 1963 on the Eisenhower Expressway in Chicago. He later became a professor at UC-Berkeley and moved to the Bay Area.
Studies prove ramp meters work. When meters are turned off, or sped up, travel time increases. And drivers plead for the meters to be slowed down.
There are now nearly 560 active ramp meters in the Bay Area and the goal is 1320 by 2025.
Professor Emeritus William Nazaroff received the Pettenkofer Award at the Indoor Air 2018 Conference. The Pettenkofer Award is the highest award given by the Academy of Fellows of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate.
The award is bestowed on an individual in recognition of outstanding work in advancing the indoor air sciences.
Ending this year’s CEE competitions on a high note, our Cal Seismic Design Team placed first in this year’s EERI Seismic Design Competition (SDC). This was the largest SDC ever, with 40 teams representing 8 countries,16 US states and Puerto Rico.
Cal Seismic also set a record for the lightest building in competition history at .305 lbs, which earned them the additional award for Best Seismic Performance.
Congratulations, Seismic!
Read about T.Y. Lin (M.S.’33 CE), professor of civil engineering from 1946–76, who perfected the use of prestressed concrete and profoundly changed the history of building construction.
Often called the “Father of Prestressed Concrete,” Lin greatly simplified the design process for using the material, which quickly became integrated into high-rise buildings, long-span bridges, dams and other structures.

Last month, PhD student Millard McElwee led classes on water quality sensors at the 4th annual Tangipahoa African American Heritage Museum STEM and aviation summer camp.
McElwee set up a system of microcontrollers linked to a program that students in the summer camp used to develop a water quality sensor.
