Alex Becker, Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering, passed away on December 16, 2024. He was 89 years old. Professor Becker was a Polish Holocaust survivor who emigrated to Montreal after World War II. Between 1958 and 1964, he received his B.S., MS., and PhD in Physics from McGill University and did postdoctoral work at the Centre de Recherches Geophysiques in France. 

CEE Professor Emeritus Armen Der Kiureghian has authored a new book titled From Earthquake Tragedy to Beacon of Light: The Story of the American University of Armenia. The book chronicles the inspiring journey of the American University of Armenia (AUA).

The narrative begins with UC Berkeley's response to the devastating Spitak earthquake of 1988, leading to the establishment of AUA in 1991 during a period of immense challenges in Armenia. It then details the institution's remarkable growth and accomplishments over the past three decades.

We are proud to announce that California PATH has been awarded a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) SMART grant for their innovative “I-40 TradePort Corridor Intelligent Data Platform” project. The project is led by Bernalillo County, New Mexico.

CEE Professors Jonathan Bray and Adda Athanasopoulos-Zekkos are serving as Chair and Secretary, respectively, of the Technical Committee (TC) 203 "Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Associated Problems" of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).
