(CEE)² Program Tours Bechtel Engineering Center Construction Site

The (CEE)² Program teamed up with New World Architects’ (NWA) Summer Camp to tour the construction site of the new Bechtel Engineering Center on UC Berkeley’s campus. This environmental design-based camp focuses on educating middle school students from underrepresented communities about various architectural professions. Now in its 10th year, the NWA camp organizers integrated Construction and Building Systems into their dynamic curriculum. 

EVs Could Last Nearly Forever — If Car Companies Let Them

Gas-powered engines consist of thousands of parts that move against each other, while a typical electric vehicle (EV) has only a few dozen moving parts. This simplicity results in lower maintenance costs and easier upkeep due to less wear and tear. As a result, EVs can outlast the average 200,000-mile lifespan of gas-powered vehicles, making them a more economical and durable option for drivers. The technology behind EVs is continuously improving.

In this new position, Kelly brings a wealth of experience and a visionary approach, aiming to advance our mission of fostering innovation and excellence within the CEE community.

The (CEE)² program is an innovative initiative dedicated to advancing community engagement in research, teaching, and service across the department. It focuses on building relationships and strengthening partnerships with local Bay Area communities, equipping faculty, staff, and students to navigate community engagement opportunities effectively.

As the (CEE)² Staff Director, Kelly will oversee the development and implementation of cutting-edge initiatives to support our students, faculty, and research efforts. Her leadership will play a key role in driving the program's goals to enhance academic opportunities, promote diversity and inclusion, and strengthen industry partnerships. New Computer Vision-Based System Monitors Seasonal Dynamics of Tropical Water

Understanding how water moves and changes worldwide is more important than ever due to climate change, but monitoring inland water in the tropics is not easy. Most satellites are optical and take photos of surfaces. They cannot see through the thick cloud cover and dense vegetation that conceal the rivers, lakes, and wetlands below.

Berkeley CEE Research Paper Wins Best Paper Award at ICRAT

Congratulations to CEE doctoral students Emin Burak Onat, Shangqing (Albert) Cao, Xuan Jiang, and CEE Professors Mark Hansen and Raja Sengupta for winning the best paper award in the Trajectories and Networks track at ICRAT! This conference marked the 11th International Conference on Research in Air Transportation Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, held last week.

Jack Moehle Elected Honorary Member of Architectural Institute of Japan

CEE Professor Jack Moehle was inducted as an Honorary Member of the Architectural Institute of Japan during a special ceremony held in Tokyo on May 30th. The honor recognizes his contributions to earthquake engineering and collaborative activities between Japan and the United States. Since its founding in 1886, only seven non-Japanese members have received this honor.
