On Wednesday, September 11th, Banatao Auditorium was buzzing with energy as CSI CEO Ashraf Habibullah delivered an engaging and insightful talk on the importance of "human engineering" in education. Drawing on research from the Carnegie Foundation, which highlights that 85% of financial success is attributed to interpersonal skills rather than technical expertise, Habibullah emphasized the need for students—especially those in technical fields—to incorporate human engineering into their education.

The (CEE)² Program teamed up with New World Architects’ (NWA) Summer Camp to tour the construction site of the new Bechtel Engineering Center on UC Berkeley’s campus. This environmental design-based camp focuses on educating middle school students from underrepresented communities about various architectural professions. Now in its 10^th year, the NWA camp organizers integrated Construction and Building Systems into their dynamic curriculum. 

Gas-powered engines consist of thousands of parts that move against each other, while a typical electric vehicle (EV) has only a few dozen moving parts. This simplicity results in lower maintenance costs and easier upkeep due to less wear and tear. As a result, EVs can outlast the average 200,000-mile lifespan of gas-powered vehicles, making them a more economical and durable option for drivers. The technology behind EVs is continuously improving.

CEE Associate Professor Amy Pickering has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health titled "Multi-component chlorination intervention to reduce neonatal infections in rural health facilities." Maternal and neonatal mortality remains high in sub-Saharan Africa, and infections are a leading cause of death. 

Understanding how water moves and changes worldwide is more important than ever due to climate change, but monitoring inland water in the tropics is not easy. Most satellites are optical and take photos of surfaces. They cannot see through the thick cloud cover and dense vegetation that conceal the rivers, lakes, and wetlands below.

Congratulations to CEE Assistant Professor Maria Laura Delle Monache on being named ITS Faculty of the Year! Delle Monache was nominated for her research, teaching, and service excellence within the ITS community. The Institute of Transportation Studies will present awards on August 21 at the Richmond Field Station (RFS).

Congratulations to CEE doctoral students Emin Burak Onat, Shangqing (Albert) Cao, Xuan Jiang, and CEE Professors Mark Hansen and Raja Sengupta for winning the best paper award in the Trajectories and Networks track at ICRAT! This conference marked the 11th International Conference on Research in Air Transportation Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, held last week.
