Congratulations to CEE Professor Arpad Horvath on his induction into the National Academy of Engineering (NAE)! He was elected for his achievements in environmental life-cycle assessment of infrastructure systems. Horvath is one of 114 new U.S. members and 21 international members elected to the academy. NAE membership is considered one of the highest professional distinctions given to an engineer.
Recent severe storms and tidal surges have damaged and closed numerous California piers, from Santa Cruz to San Diego. At least a half dozen public piers have been closed after being repeatedly damaged by storms with multiple atmospheric rivers hitting the state over the past year. Repair costs have reached millions of dollars.
Congratulations to CEE Professor Iris Tommelein for being awarded the 2024 ASCE Construction Management Award! The Construction Management Award is a national award given to "an individual who has been a member in good standing of the Construction Institute or the American Society of Civil Engineers for at least 5 years and who has made outstanding contributions to the field of construction management as a practitioner, educator, or researcher either in the form of written presentations, scholarly work, or notable performance."
During their lab on November 7th, 2023, students in CE153: Airport Design had the opportunity to meet with HNTB’s aviation group. Representatives Brian Gaul, Max Vale, and Arlo Fischer led the workshop, introducing students to the company and the vast amount of projects they’ve undertaken and are currently undertaking.
On November 3rd, 2023, students in CE153: Airport Design (i.e. Transportation Facility Design) took a field trip to San Francisco International Airport (SFO). They met with Alaska Airlines representatives, who led them through baggage claim, the check-in area, security, and boarding.
We are excited to share that Luis Ceferino and Eyitayo Opabola have been appointed Assistant Professors in the CEE faculty cohort, effective January 1, 2024! Ceferino and Opabola will contribute valuable knowledge to CEE's Structural Engineering, Mechanics, and Materials program.
William Wang, a Ph.D. student, along with undergraduate students Emily Wu, Elisa Woodham, and Annie Xu, prepared the rebar for a scale bridge pier wall test with bidirectional loading. The research is sponsored by Caltrans, and William's aim is to enhance the safety and economy of pier wall bridges by gaining a better understanding of their performance. William is co-advised by CEE Professors Tracy Becker and Jack Moehle.
Paul Lee (CE MS' 16) has been featured on the cover page of the January/February 2024 print issue of Civil Engineering Magazine. He received his M.S. in Civil Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2016, completing studies in the Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate program.
