Berkeley CEE Alum Marlene Watson Receives the 2023 AISES Ely S. Parker Award

Congratulations to CEE Berkeley alum Marlene Watson for receiving the 2023 AISES Ely S. Parker Award! Recipients of the award notably follow the example of Ely S. Parker, a 19th-century Seneca Nation chief who broke multiple racial barriers while establishing an enduring legacy that continues to inspire today’s Indigenous leaders. Marlene Watson is Navajo from Tohlakai, NM and Wide Ruins, AZ and was raised in Oakland, CA.

NSF-Funded Project Team Hosts Community Workshops

The National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded Smart and Connected Communities (SCC) Project team, led by CEE Professor Kenichi Soga, CITRIS scholar Louise Comfort, and post-doc Seunghyun Lee, organized two kick-off community workshops to promote collaboration and engagement. These workshops took place on February 15th at the East Bay Municipal Utility District's headquarters office in Oakland and on May 10th at the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority in San Rafael, Marin. 

In Memoriam: Professor Emeritus Adolf D. May

Dr. Adolf D. May, Professor Emeritus of Civil & Environmental Engineering, passed away on August 16, 2023. He was 96 years old.

Professor May pioneered the science of Highway Transportation in Civil Engineering, creating and receiving the first Ph.D. in the field in 1952 at Purdue University. May was passionate about his work as a researcher and educator, retiring from UC Berkeley after nearly four decades of service.
